DESCRIPTION:
I learned a few facts after singing this tune for years and finally recording it recently. Louisa Stead is said to have written these faith-filled words, from the depth of despair, as a prayer soon after she witnessed her husband drown. And William Kirkpatrick composer of the music for this hymn lived in Germantown, Pennsylvania and is buried in Philadelphia, a mere 6 miles from where I was born and raised.
I hope you enjoy this arrangement of Tis So Sweet. I chose to use percussion along with guitar, just because I liked the groove that developed between the instruments.
Just when I thought I was finished with this piece, I played it for my lovely daughter. She said, " Dad I really wanted to hear more whistling after the solo part". So, I told her that I had considered adding a floating flute part in the last verse/chorus earlier in the recording process but nothing seemed to feel right. So, the very next day, I sat down and tried a different approach. In addition to the whistle descant beginning from the 3rd verse on, I also added some choral vocal parts that just seemed to make sense. I really appreciate my daughter's candid assessment of the composition which was the impetus for this final ending. I hope you enjoy the entire work, for both the music and uplifting words of reassurance; words that have become increasingly relevant to me. My prayer is that these words might become relevant for you as well.
Words: Louisa M. R. Stead, 1882.
Music: William J. Kirkpatrick
lyrics
LYRICS:
'Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just to take Him at His word;
Just to rest upon His promise,
Just to know "Thus saith the Lord"
CHORUS:
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!
How I've proved Him o'er and o'er!
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
O for grace to trust Him more!
Yes, 'tis sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just from sin and self to cease;
Just from Jesus simply taking
Life and rest, and joy and peace.
I'm so glad I learned to trust Him,
Precious Jesus, Savior, friend;
And I know that Thou art with me,
Wilt be with me to the end.

I have been looking for a place to post my songs. I'm glad you found it. I've been playing acoustic guitar and bass for
some time. This site for me, is a place to share my music. You'll find mostly original, but also songs that have special meaning to me. Songs that I thought would be neat to record myself. So, take a look around. I'll add more as I finish them. Blessings,
