DESCRIPTION:
"Over The Rainbow" has become the signature song most closely identified with Judy Garland. After originally performing it in the 1939 feature film Wizard of Oz, she would perform it for the next thirty years, until her death in 1969. In a letter to Harold Arlen, Garland wrote:

"'Over The Rainbow' has become part of my life. It's so symbolic of everybody's dreams and wishes that I'm sure that's why some people get tears in their eyes when they hear it. I've sung it thousands of times and it's still the song that's closest to my heart."

In my rendition, with bass and guitar, I've chosen to include an introductory verse (melody) that was not used in the movie but is often used in theatrical productions of The Wizard of Oz. In fact, Judy Garland herself sang the introductory verse only once on a 1948 radio broadcast of The Louella Parsons Show.

"Over The Rainbow" with its enchanting melody has always moved me. Equally as pungent are the childhood memories it evokes in me, watching Dorothy sing this song in the beginning of "The Wizard Of Oz" movie which was broadcast each year. Incidentally, as most all of you know, the movie begins in black and white and then in a wave of cinematic artistry changes to color upon Dorothy's arrival in Oz. This is a fact I did not know until I was an adult. Each year, while growing up, we would sit down to watch it on our B&W TV and when Dorothy opened her door in Oz, the B&W would change to ......B&W.

I hope you enjoy!

lyrics

LYRICS:
When all the world is a hopeless jumble
And the raindrops tumble all around
Heaven opens a magic lane

When all the clouds darken up the skyway
There's a rainbow highway to be found
Leading from your windowpane

To a place behind the sun
Just a step beyond the rain

Somewhere, over the rainbow
Way up high
There's a land that I dreamed of
Once in a lullaby

Somewhere, over the rainbow
Skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true

Some day I'll wish upon a star and wake up where the clouds are
far behind me
Where laughter falls like lemon drops away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me

Somewhere, over the rainbow
Skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true

If happy little bluebirds fly
Beyond the rainbow
Why, oh, why can't I?

Paul Palan - Life In Between Lincoln, Nebraska

I have been looking for a place to post my songs. I'm glad you found it. I've been playing acoustic guitar and bass for some time. This site for me, is a place to share my music. You'll find mostly original, but also songs that have special meaning to me. Songs that I thought would be neat to record myself. So, take a look around. I'll add more as I finish them. Blessings,
Paul
