The lyrics for "Puff, the Magic Dragon" were based on a 1959 poem by Leonard Lipton, a 19-year-old Cornell University student. Lipton was inspired by an Ogden Nash poem titled "Custard the Dragon", about a "realio, trulio little pet dragon."

In 1961, Peter Yarrow joined Paul Stookey and Mary Travers to form Peter, Paul and Mary. The group incorporated "Puff" into their live performances before recording it in 1962

Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal puff, 
And brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff. oh

Dragons live forever but not so little boys 
Painted wings and giant strings make way for other toys. 
One sad night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more 
And Puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar. 

His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain, 
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane. 
Without his life-long friend, puff could not be brave, 
So puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave. oh!  ( Refrain)
