My brother Perry took his own life in 1986. Time has eased the pain, but not erased it. It never will. Perry was 22, and had endured a life of challenges, mostly due to his learning disability and the times in which he lived. Learning disabilities were not always understood then and many times not tolerated. So, Perry spent his life compensating for his shortcomings and adapting to his world, a world in which he felt like he never quite fit. He was a big teddy bear. Kind, compassionate, caring. That seems to be the way it works. Those that endure hardships, many times reflect those positive traits in abundance. He did.
My brother Kevin wrote the poem which became this song. Kevin always has been the wordsmith, writing poetry and thoughts, and capturing raw emotion for as long as I can remember. He sent me the poem one day, and the music essentially wrote itself. I read through the poem several times. And after drying my eyes because of it's poignancy, I began to compose. I didn't change a word. I didn't have to. I added two lines in the chorus and the song was complete.
Shortly after the song was completed, I recorded it on my 4-track cassette recorder. Primitive by today's standards, but it allowed me to add elements to the song that otherwise may not have been included. I included vocal harmonies, bass, and a simple repetitive whistling theme that stuck in my head and seemed to reflect the essence of who Perry was.
My goal, ever since I began recording again several years ago, was to re-record this song digitally, and share it. This recording is the result of that effort.
lyrics
LYRICS:
Hurry, hurry Perry, hurry, into your Mother's arms.
Feel in them the love that only she can know.
You are safe there for a time in which you'll never come to harm.
But she cannot reach far enough to hold you where you go.
Hurry, hurry Perry, hurry, look into Daddy's eyes.
See in them the love he tried so hard to show.
It was never very easy for him to watch you grow.
And he cannot see far enough to guide you where you go.
(CHORUS)
In life you became what no one ever should.
And in death you became what in life you never, never could.
My prayer is that the lives you left behind will start to see,
That the Love you know, is the the Love that set you free.
Hurry, hurry brother, hurry, into each of our hearts.
That have measured every moment since you tore them apart.
We will never judge you for your choice because we know,
You will stand before the face of God, and there but for the grace of God, we shall go.

I have been looking for a place to post my songs. I'm glad you found it. I've been playing acoustic guitar and bass for
some time. This site for me, is a place to share my music. You'll find mostly original, but also songs that have special meaning to me. Songs that I thought would be neat to record myself. So, take a look around. I'll add more as I finish them. Blessings,
