about

DESCRIPTION:
This composition has been a real joy for me. I originally came up with the framework of this song many years ago. I've refined the guitar part some over time, and the melody has been in my brain only to come out occasionally in the form of a whistling part. I really wanted to record this and keep the arrangement as close as possible to how I heard it in my head. For me, that was guitar and whistle. So I recorded the entire song about a year ago. But I used only the guitar for both the accompaniment and the melody. I thought I was done with it. In fact, my son Hank, even helped me edit and mix my first effort. I listened to it a few times over this past year and just never was totally satisfied with my arrangement.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago. I sat down and tried different instrumental combinations. The flute, for me, was a logical choice to replace my whistling part. And the English horn (a close cousin of the oboe) was perfect to compliment the flute. I added a small string section along with the acoustic guitar and the ensemble was complete.

I called this song "Mystic Island", named after a real oceanfront town in New Jersey. This song evokes in me, memories of the times that I visited Mystic Island. But also, I remember all of the time that I spent, as I grew up on the east coast, enjoying the beaches and the ocean. Over the years I've seen many beaches. It didn't matter if it was a beach in New Jersey, Santa Monica, Corpus Christi, Fort Walton, Seattle or even Sebago Lake in Maine. It is the peacefulness and simplicity of the sand between your toes, juxtaposed with the sheer power of the waves and the vastness of the water that I remember. Whatever your lake or ocean experience, go there in your mind and remember. You'll be glad you did.

I hope you enjoy this song.

Paul Palan - Life In Between Lincoln, Nebraska

I have been looking for a place to post my songs. I'm glad you found it. I've been playing acoustic guitar and bass for some time. This site for me, is a place to share my music. You'll find mostly original, but also songs that have special meaning to me. Songs that I thought would be neat to record myself. So, take a look around. I'll add more as I finish them. Blessings,
Paul
