about

PERSONAL NOTE:
I arranged and recorded this song because of a special request from my mother, June Palan. My mother is one of my biggest fans. In fact, I would venture to say she knows many of my compositions better than I do. I immerse myself in each composition during the arranging, recording, editing and mixing process. And upon completion I upload each song and move on to the next composition. My mother however, listens to many of my works daily, during her contemplative prayer time, while she meditates and writes poetry and personal journal entries, on the shores of New Jersey. She has even called me her "prayer partner". I am both honored and humbled by that title. I hope this arrangement, of one of my mother's favorite hymns, is a blessing to her as she daily seeks God's will.

DESCRIPTION:
This hymn was written in 1929 by Joyce Torrens (1901-53), who wrote under the name of Jan Struther, at the request of Torrens's London neighbor, Canon Percy Dearmer of Westminster Abbey, for his new edition of “Songs of Praise”.
Dearmer was delighted by its success, announcing in 1933 that he was "lately returned from a service of university students, who have speedily made it their favorite".
A friend commented that it is "entirely characteristic of its age, forward-looking, non-doctrinal, non-sectarian" and highlights its decision, quite daring at the time, to replace "Thy" with "You". Torrens herself, had only minimal interest in Christianity.
The song is set to the melody of an Irish folksong, collected in the village of Slane, which is also the melody of another well-known hymn, “Be Thou My Vision”.
This hymn is typically used in liturgy, at weddings and at the beginning of funeral services.

lyrics

LYRICS:
Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy,
Whose trust, ever childlike, no cares could destroy,
Be there at our waking, and give us, we pray,
Your bliss in our hearts, Lord,
At the break of the day.

Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith,
Whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe,
Be there at our labors and give us, we pray,
Your strength in our hearts, Lord,
At the noon of the day.

Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace,
Your hands swift to welcome, Your arms to embrace.
Be there at our homing, and give us, we pray,
Your love in our hearts, Lord,
At the eve of the day.

Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm,
Whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm,
Be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray,
Your peace in our hearts, Lord,
At the end of the day.

about

Paul Palan - Life In Between Lincoln, Nebraska

I have been looking for a place to post my songs. I'm glad you found it. I've been playing acoustic guitar and bass for some time. This site for me, is a place to share my music. You'll find mostly original, but also songs that have special meaning to me. Songs that I thought would be neat to record myself. So, take a look around. I'll add more as I finish them. Blessings,
Paul
