about

DESCRIPTION:
During the years between 1986 - 1992, my wife Katrina and family (Aaron and Hank, and then Luke 1988, and Emily 1991), attended First Christian Church in Wellington Kansas, where we lived. Many happy memories surround that time in my life. New job, first real house, our young family settling in one place, and our newfound church. During our time there, Katrina and I were involved in many things. Katrina (piano) and I (guitar/bass) played for several years at a wonderful contemporary worship service. Another ministry I found myself in was Children's ministry. It began innocently enough when someone asked me to be a 5th grade Sunday school teacher. I was hooked. I quickly found that I loved teaching and sharing God with this age group. They were young enough to not yet have the cares and issues that would arrive with their teenage years, And they were old enough for critical thinking and understanding. And they would laugh at my lame attempts at humor. Sometimes. But most of all, I felt we could have serious biblical discussions. And we did. And as I prepared each week's lesson, an interesting thing happened. I began to learn as well. Many of the stories I knew, but many I did not. So, I grew as well as I studied about characters from both the Old and New Testament.
Also during this time, the church began a Wednesday night supper/study session. It attracted many people, especially children. I felt the calling to begin a children's choir, mainly as a way to teach biblical principles, but also to just have fun. We did.
It was during this period while leading the children's choir that I wrote a few songs specifically for children. This song, "Joyful Noise" was one of those songs. We never sang it though. I wrote the melody and words, and had an idea how I wanted it to sound, including orchestration. But, that was as far as I got. I put it on the "virtual bookshelf" in my mind where it gathered dust until about 2 months ago.
One thing I've learned over the years, is that music is a strong medium with which to convey emotion, ideas, and truth. Words accompanied by music are much more likely to be heard and remembered by the listener. More so than words alone.
As a teenager, I and many of my brothers learned the words of Psalm 100 as a song. I'm certain, that today if you asked one of my brothers or anyone involved in our various church musical groups to recall the words to Psalm 100, it would not be a difficult task. The words were inseparably linked to the melody and meter of that song.

Psalm 100

1 Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.
2 Serve the Lord with gladness: come into his presence with singing.

3 Know ye that the Lord is God: it is he that has made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his holy name.

5 For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

Another very special scripture that has been important to me is Psalm 96, which begins;

Psalm 96

1 Sing to the Lord a new song;
sing to the Lord, all the earth.
2 Sing to the Lord, praise his name;
proclaim his salvation day after day.
3 Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous deeds among all peoples.

I believe I know and have sung more than a dozen songs with some variation of the "Sing to the Lord a new song" message in their lyrics.
These two scriptures have been very important to me. I was gifted with the ability to sing and play guitar and bass. I have been presented with many, many opportunities to use those gifts to make a joyful noise and sing a new sing unto the Lord. Hopefully, I've been faithful to that call.

The message in my composition, "Joyful Noise" is based solely on these two scriptures. The theology and message is simple. And because I wrote this song for children, the words are simple and straight forward. Easy to sing and easy to remember. The musical arrangement, as I stated before, was kind of in my head for all of this time. But it wasn't until I recently sat down and started to add each of the instruments, and hear how they interacted, that this piece came alive for me. I hope you enjoy!

lyrics

LYRICS:
Open up your mouth and sing
Let the people hear your words
Sing them loud and sing them clear
Sing them so that all might hear

(CHORUS)
Make a joyful noise. Make a joyful noise
Sing a new song unto the Lord
Make a joyful noise. Make a joyful noise
Sing a new song unto the Lord

Let the joy you show outside
Reflect the love you know within
Let the music move your soul
For Christ the Lord has made you whole

I have been looking for a place to post my songs. I'm glad you found it. I've been playing acoustic guitar and bass for some time. This site for me, is a place to share my music. You'll find mostly original, but also songs that have special meaning to me. Songs that I thought would be neat to record myself. So, take a look around. I'll add more as I finish them. Blessings,
Paul
