DESCRIPTION:
Recording this song was very different for me. The entire musical content came to me some years ago. The chords, the melody, the entire arrangement, even the “talk box” distorted voice that you'll hear in between the verses and chorus. All of it has been swirling around in my head for some years. My problem was that when the music came to me, only a few words arrived. Those words were the Chorus, and the first lines of the 2nd verse:
“ Is he like an old shoe sittin' deep in the closet?
You know He's there but you don't really care.”

That was it. So, I had an entire song ready to go with only a handful of words. Over the years that followed, I attempted to write more words to make the song complete, to no avail. It was a little frustrating for me. But I always told myself the words would come when it was time. About 2 months ago I really felt it was time to finally record this song. Still no words. No worries though, I'll just start recording the music and see where it goes. I recorded all of the instrumentation: drums, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, rock organ, even the tambourine. So the entire musical track was ready to go, sans lyrics. Think Karaoke, complete with a bouncing ball, but with no place for the ball to bounce.

In a phone conversation with my mother, I explained my dilemma and we talked about the as yet unwritten lyrics for the song. I asked her if she would consider jotting down some thoughts that came to her. I explained the song idea and shared with her the few lyrics that I had. My mother, in addition to being the most spiritual person I know, is also quite the poet and wordsmith. I thought maybe some words that came to her my jolt me off of dead center....lyrically. What happened next, was rather interesting. The very next day I sat down and was thinking about lyrics and within about a half hour I had written down four complete verses that said pretty much what I wanted to say with the song. After years of nothing, the song was now complete. A week later I received some ideas in the mail from my mother and those ideas reinforced the lyrics that I'd written down, sort of a confirmation. So, after many years of waiting for just the right words, a brief conversation with my mother was all it took to break loose the log jam. Thanks, Mom!

While this song may sound like it is talking about four different people and their relationship with God, it could just as easily be describing me, and the various types of relationships I've had with God through the years. In fact, it does. I don't think I'm alone. I've learned that being in relationship with God is not a destination, but rather a journey. Sometimes you are best buddies and sometimes perhaps you take the relationship for granted. I know, I have.

My hope is that you are as blessed listening to this song as I have been blessed discovering it.

lyrics

LYRICS:
Where does Jesus fit in your life?
Do you know joy or do you know strife?
Open your heart and let Him in
Let His healing power in you begin

V1
Is He like a birthday gift that you got but never opened?
It could be awesome, hey, but you'd never know
Tear off the wrapping to see what's inside and...
Open up and let Him into your life

V2
Is He like an old shoe sittin' deep in the closet?
You know He's there but you don't really care
Just like the shoe, what is old can be made new …..if you...
Open up and let Him into your life

V3
Is He like a chunk of gold that you have and always treasured?
You know its worth you know it never grows old
By His love your life will surely be measured
You know what it's like to let Him into your life

V4
Is there pain in your past
From which you feel there's no healin'?
The ache runs deep, or the anger controls
Jesus can heal you and give restoration...if you..
Open up and let Him into your life

about

Paul Palan - Life In Between Lincoln, Nebraska

I have been looking for a place to post my songs. I'm glad you found it. I've been playing acoustic guitar and bass for some time. This site for me, is a place to share my music. You'll find mostly original, but also songs that have special meaning to me. Songs that I thought would be neat to record myself. So, take a look around. I'll add more as I finish them. Blessings,
Paul
