DESCRIPTION:
This song has been a favorite of mine since I first learned it in 2000. I liked the melody and chord progression, but was especially drawn to its short and sweet message of hope. The lyrics are taken almost verbatim from Philippians 1:6. Paul, in chains and in prison because of his faith, writes to his beloved friends in Philippi.
3 I thank my God every time I remember you. 4 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, 6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
Paul, in spite of the miserable conditions he and Timothy are enduring, writes to the faithful in Philippi to remind them that the good work that God began in each of them will, most definitely be completed in them. In other words, God has a plan for your life and "God won't leave you hangin'". God made you. God will begin and complete a good work in you, because God loves you. How cool is that?
A little bit about the composition. I must be honest. I never actually heard the version of this song recorded by Steve Green, the author. At least not until this morning as I searched for the lyrics online. It was then that I discovered several Youtube offerings by Mr. Green. I very much like his original version. But, having not heard the composers version of his song before, I have been singing this song the way I heard it in my head for almost 14 years. This recording is a result of the music I heard in my head. I've employed several different musical ideas and tools that I've not used before. Most of the ideas developed as I was recording. The introduction on this song is in 7/4 time. A first for me. It just seemed to want to go that direction. This is the first song on which I've used an electric guitar. The Gibson SG guitar, graciously loaned to me by my nephew Patrick, allowed me to incorporate a slightly "rockish" undercurrent. Another first, I created and played a jazz piano solo. You will even hear several ever so slight phrases played on a "Moog" -like keyboard. I hope you enjoy the music. But most of all I hope you enjoy and are blessed by the message of hope that God gives to us through Paul.
